CDS Enrichment Class Descriptions * Winter 2011/2012

MONDAY

 

AROUND THE WORLD 

Ms. Maydick - Grades PS-3

Students choosing “Around the World” enrichment will learn about many different countries and cultures.  They will read a book or story from a different country weekly and learn about how children living in that country, play, eat, and go to school.  Children will complete a craft or participate weekly in a specific custom unique to that native land.  It will be fun to explore how other children live! ($10 material fee)

 

CAKE POPS

Ms. Sgroi - Grades 3-8

Students will decorate yummy cake pops based on a different theme each week.  They will use a variety of decorating tools and sources of creative inspiration -- a perfect way to bring out their inner pastry chefs!  Please note, no nuts will be used. ($20 ingredient fee) 

 

 

 

 

 

INVENTIVE INVENTIONS

Mrs. Haffner – Grades 4-8

Students will work both individually and in small groups to create inventions and robots to assist with daily activities.  Using a variety of technology resources, we will explore robotics, engineering, and some creative thinking to master weekly challenges! ($20 material fee)

 

 

 TUESDAY

PROJECT RUNWAY!

Ms. Sgroi - Grades 3-8

Do you have a passion for fashion? Join Ms. Sgroi each week as she challenges students to “design” an outfit based on an exciting new idea.  Students will create a portfolio of their unique work.

($15 material fee)

 

CUPCAKE CREATIONS

Ms. Conlin-  Grades PK-8

Calling all chefs!  Come join the fun as Ms. Conlin uses Wilton-inspired techniques to decorate cupcakes and muffins.  Students will use their creative hands to make “spaghetti and meatball” cupcakes, animals, and so much more. Don’t miss out on this fun opportunity!

($15 ingredient fee)

 

LEGO Junior

Mr. L - Grades 1-3

A Chatham Day School favorite, this class is our very own Legoland!  The students are free to build anything from houses to spaceships.  They are encouraged to collaborate and share their designs with the class.

 

FLASH MOB DANCING

Mrs. Ferranti – Grades 4-8

We will learn basic dance moves from some classic dance routines.  First up on the playlist: Michael Jackson’s Thriller (known to some from the movie 13 Going on 30).  We will finish the trimester with a surprise flash mob dance on CDS grounds!

 

CLAY SCULPTURE

Mrs. Grabko – Grades PS-8

Are you looking forward to spending some winter afternoons sculpting clay?  We will make beads, ceramic artworks, and various three-dimensional sculptures.  We will learn how to create coil pot designs, use additive and subtractive methods of hand clay building.  (Limit 12 students)

 

 

   WEDNESDAY

 TAEKWONDO

Master Byung Kim- Grades PK-6

Welcome back Master Kim, owner of World Champion Taekwondo. Master Kim, a first place gold medalist in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, will provide each participant the opportunity to strengthen mind, body, and spirit. He helps each child improve physical skills, focus, discipline, and self confidence.  Master Kim provides a nurturing, enjoyable atmosphere.  ($35 uniform fee)


INTRO TO LEGOS

Mr. L – Grades  PS-K

This enrichment class will introduce students to the wonderful world of Legos!  Students are encouraged to use their creativity to make all sorts of fun and novel creations!

 

DIGITAL PHOTO MAGIC

Mr. Murad – Grades 4-8

Have you ever wanted to make magic?  You can, with Photoshop! Follow along as Mr. Murad shows you the tools and the tricks needed to make photo magic.  Bring color to black and white photos, create a scene with many images merged into one, make things disappear is if they were never there, and breathe life into your own ideas as they come alive on the screen! With what you learn in Photoshop, you can do magic!

 

CRAFTY KIDS

Ms. France – Grades  PS-3

Students will use a variety of craft materials to get messy!  From beads, to feathers, and from glitter to pipe cleaners -- students get an opportunity to create unique masterpieces. ($10 material fee)

 

 

THURSDAY

DARE TO GET FIT

Mrs. Oravits – Grades 2-8

Come and join Mrs. Oravits in an organized and energetic class.  We will enjoy a variety of different activities to keep us moving -- from walking, playing baseball, football, zumba, cardio kickboxing -- to tag, capture the flag, and many, many more.  Some classes will end with a healthy treat created by the class.

($25 material fee)

 

JEWLERY MAKING

Fatima Lopes - Grades PK-8

Welcome to a jewelry making class for our beginners!  Ms. Fatima Lopes teaches students the basics of beading such as, stringing wire, using crimp beads, attaching clasps, head pins and earring hooks.  Come and spend afternoons creating jewelry that you can wear home after each class! ($35 material fee)

 

LEGO Senior

Mr. C - Grades 4-8

CDS offers a more advanced Lego class for our experienced connoisseurs.  The students will share their unique constructions with the class.

 

LET’S WRITE A BOOK

Mrs. Ferranti – Grades 4-8

Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and even Steven King did it, why can’t we?  We’re talking about writing a book in serial form, with a chapter produced each week.  We know it is ambitious, but we are up to the task.  Each week the class as a group will decide where our adventure will go next, and post it online.  We can react to reader response….or not! Come join the fun!

 

FRIDAY

NEWSPAPER

Mrs. May – Grades 3-8

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The CDS Times is now a blog!  Students transform into reporters engaged in 21st century writing skills as they write and post newspapers stories on the CDS Times blog.  Students will make sense of language in real context as they hone the skills necessary to become writers.

 

DUCT TAPE CREATIONS

Mrs. Oravits - Grades  2-8

It’s back by popular demand!  Both girls and boys create a variety of useable and wearable art collectibles with duct tape.  Come try the newest rage!  Students will make friendship bracelets, wallets, bags, and much more!  Join Mrs. Oravits for afternoons of creative adventure! ($25 material fee)

Mrs. Haffner – PS-8

Students will participate in fun and exciting science experiments each week by exploring science magic tricks, making things explode, and exploring the scientific hypothesis. All scientists are welcome!

($20 material fee)
