The early childhood experience at CDS establishes a joyful foundation for learning and a love of school for our youngest community members!
During this period of extraordinary development, teachers create authentic learning opportunities in a setting that fosters social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. In each class, children experience a balance of structured, teacher-directed lessons and time to learn through play and social interactions with peers. Play is an essential tool for learning at this stage of development, so students are given time during centers to explore with blocks, develop imaginative stories, and express themselves with creative tools. Social interactions are also a primary focus, and children are taught to be responsible for themselves and to be considerate of others through a school-wide core values program called “Take Five + 1,” as well as monthly themes that focus on life skills such as kindness, respect, cooperation, and gratitude.
Paramount to the success of the Early Childhood Program is our commitment to frequent and meaningful communication with parents. Teachers publish a weekly classroom newsletter and also write personal emails about each child. Each semester, families have the opportunity to meet for a formal conference with their child’s teacher and can request conferences at any time during the school year. At the end of each semester, a detailed written progress reports covering every area of the curriculum is shared with families. School-wide and division-based announcements are sent home electronically to the entire community to share events and programs of note.
