Welcome to Chatham Day School. We are small by design and that’s not just a catch phrase. Here, the relationships among students, teachers, administrators, and staff are what bind CDS together and create a caring, responsive, and deliberate place for teaching and learning. Students are really known here; they are understood, and they know it.
When students know they are understood and in a place that supports them, they are able to devote their focus and energy on acquiring new skills, building positive social relationships, and growing into a person who is independent and respectful of others. At CDS, we care about developing a young person’s character as well as his or her academic competencies. Expertise needs to be attached to values if it is to be truly useful to the wider world.
Because of our small class size, faculty members are able to teach in ways that would be impossible with 15 – 25 students in a class. The low teacher-student ratio guarantees that each student receives the time, attention and focus required to ensure success and build self-confidence. No student gets lost in the tumble of a large class in a large grade in a large school. It is just calmer here, and for some students, that makes all the difference.
No two students need the same type of guidance and instruction. Being small by design allows teachers to personalize learning for each student. Need to move forward quickly? More practice required? Need the information explained differently? Want to explore a particular area of interest? Need to review it one more time? At CDS it’s all possible.
I invite you to come visit CDS and see our school in person. That is the best way to understand who we are and how we teach and learn. Even the best of websites is no substitute for life.
I look forward to greeting you in person,
David Lowry, Ph.D.
