In 2016, S.T.E.A.M. infused education is about more than gaining skills. It is about transforming education, creating learners who can think as designers, encouraging unique problem solving opportunities and inspiring students to interact with their global environment. Chatham Day School is committed to using S.T.E.A.M. as an access ramp to educational content, digital classrooms, coding and robotics, design thinking and more. As we await the opening of our new S.T.E.A.M. suite in our new building in the fall of 2016 - students are engaged in combined Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math activities on every grade level, and as a part of all content areas.  

Some exciting examples of  S.T.E.A.M. program implementation include:

  • A new third - eighth grade 1-1 Chromebook program allowing students, via Google Apps for Education, to create, collaborate, inform and publish independently and together; 
  • A unique educational iPad integration opportunity for grades PS - 2. CDS is one of the first educational app beta testers for PlayOsmo educational games. Youngest students use classroom iPads to find their voices by creating and sharing their unique digital stories;
  • S.T.E.A.M. camps and after-school enrichment classes to work with robot coding,  Smart Tables, 3D design and iPad beta testing;
  • Integrated coding and robotics opportunities throughout the curriculum at all age levels;
  • A Middle School 3-D Printers and Designers Club;
  • An award winning digital classroom and parent/teacher/student communication Learning Management System - provided by SCHOOLOGY;
  • Our teachers modeling continual learning using blended online professional development via TEQ ONLINE PD.

3D - Super Seeds

Grade 5 Science students learn about seed dispersal and adaptation. A creative S.T.E.A.M. extension project challenged them to apply all their knowledge to design 3D models of a super seed with new and better adaptations.  Using Tinkercad and Makerbot, they think virtually in 3 dimensions and then see their projects come to life on the 3D printer.

Engineering is Elementary

             In the Lower School, the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) kits from the Boston Museum of Science have been rolled out in their respective grades.  This week while preparing for a first grade challenge to design windmills as a complement to their thematic unit on weather, the students worked together in learning clubs to explore the concept of technology.  One teacher commented, “First graders were amazed to learn technology includes more than just items that require electricity!”  This curriculum fosters problem-solving skills, embraces project-based learning, and provides our students with the engineering and technology literacy needed for scientific careers in the future.

3D Design/ Printing and Design Thinking

How do we prepare students for jobs which have not yet be created, or even imagined yet?

Easy! Teach them to solve real world problems, with real world applications. CDS students use coding to recognize and solve problems with logic and 3D Printing to design solutions. These skills prepare their minds to create solutions for jobs of both today and tomorrow.

Beta Testing the newest
Educational Technology

CDS has an ongoing vendor/beta testing relationship with PlayOsmo.  Our students are encouraged to try the newest games being designed, before they are available to the public.  Students have opportunities to troubleshoot, problem solve real world issues, provide feedback to the vendor and to see their suggestions adopted into a final educational product!

Early Childhood and Lower School divisions use iPad and Osmo to find their voices, create and learn. CDS students have participated in testing OSMO apps with different educational focuses -  Tangrams (Shapes), Words (ILA), Masterpiece (Fine Arts), Newton (Logic), Numbers (Arithmatic) and the newest game - Monster which allows students to create digital stories by taking items from the physical world and adding them to the ongoing story on the iPad.

Digital Photography, Storytelling, Movie Making

Movie creation and production with a Green Screen in the classroom spurs responsibility through teamwork, creativity. Content creation shared on student websites finds an authentic audience. Art and Technology combine to engage students and inspire minds.

Global Science Initiative for Grades 5-8

The GLOBE program  is a platform for CDS Middle School students work collaboratively with students from Spain to interpret data from their respective environments. The process challenges students to not only gain an understanding of their surroundings, but to call on skills that go beyond science class.
